OUTER SUPPORT BUILDINGS (Outside the DANGER area)
For simplicity, I have separated the support areas that lie outside of the concrete wall into 'Northern' and 'Southern' Areas.
Northern support area

On the image left in the distance you can see the triangular compound where the dog kennels are and closer to the camera image left is the Mess Building. At this time, the site owner, Keith, was growing Christmas trees in the sterile area.

Picture SA10, SA11, SA12 & SA13 © Sam Tolley. This building interconnects with another leading off at an angle to the east. These pictures show it from the south, then the back of it from the west, and finally from the very rear on the eastern side.

Picture SA14 © Sam Tolley. This building was to the rear of the above (to the left in image SA6). It consists of 2 separate rooms although this could have been a post-decommission modification. it is almost certainly a pyrotechnic store, similar to those found on airfields, but likely to have housed spare flares used within the sterile area.

Picture SA15 © Sam Tolley. Near to the middle gate, this building used to have a large wall in front of it (the footings visible 3ft forward of the door). In conjunction with a 1953 architects map this was most probably the location of a generator, with the fuel possibly kept in the bricked area behind.
Picture SA16 © Keith Eldred. Taken pre-1970, this shot shows the wall and vents consistent with a generator building. |
Southern support area
Picture SA17 © Sam Tolley. Looking from the main gate on the Elveden Road up the service road that leads to the Danger Area via an elongated S bend, helping to hide the area from general view. However, the watch towers and outer fence are visible from the public road before you get to the main gate. You can see the RAFP picket on the right followed by the vehicle storage building and the 2 stand by set (generator) buildings.
