SITE FUTURE
Now that Barnham NSS has been recognised by English Heritage, Mr Eldred (the owner) is getting help towards preserving the site and returning some elements to their former glory. The grading of certain buildings has ensured their survival.
During my first visit in March 2013, the site was just being cleared of many of the trees that have grown in the past half century, in order to return some of the sterile areas to their original operational state. One set of igloos was being renovated to show what they were like in use and work was progressing on this during a subsequent visit in August 2013.
The third watch tower was under going hefty renovation as at March 2013, but was completed by August 2013, with the 4th tower undergoing work. Great amounts of skill and dedication have been shown from Keith's team of workers, many of whom are tenants on the industrial site. Four of the five towers will be restored with one being left to decay naturally. The Sperry Search lights for all bar one of the towers are missing (following theft), so if anyone knows where to find them, please get in touch! They are believed to be similar to those used on air/sea rescue launches.
It is hoped to have an education centre on site to be more proactive in sharing this amazingly intact and iconic site with as many people as possible.
